how does the concept of genre relate to your trailer

Genre is something that is used to gain knowledge of an audience and how they respond to certain things. In this essay I will be analysing the way the concept of genre is portrayed in a trailer by previous media students from the production of jawsplitter, this trailer is called Enthrallment. At the beginning of this trailer you can see religious imagery which could imply that the genre of the film is psychological horror, I think this as this genre typically has religion involved to fight of evil, this tells me that this trailer is about good v evil. Daniel chandler backs up the meaning of genre and its origin. In-addition to this the trailer has clearly shown that there is a genre.Steve Neale said that “genres are processes” that can evolve and change overtime which likely led to the creation of sub-genres. Before this argument was made the audience probably would have seen this as a horror purely because of the scary/tense music and the lighting, cut scenes and make-up used to portray the film as a horror, however now we are able to tell that this trailer would be psychological due to the representation of religion. Jason Mittell argues that genres are essential for the audience and producers because it allows the producers to decide what to create and appeal to audiences by giving them more choice. the producer of this trailer used certain conventions like holy non-diegetic music during some clips, clips of religious glass and priests to tell the audience that a psychological horror is what they will be getting into. Rick Altman explains that genre gives the audience pleasure in three different ways which are emotional, visceral and intellectual. I believe that this trailer managed to get a bit of each pleasure as there was emotional pleasure through worry for one of the characters in the trailer, there was visceral pleasure as the background sounds like the heartbeat which was used to make the viewer feel the tension, we know this as it increased through out the trailer which could represent the viewers heart. Lastly there was intellectual pleasure as the characters don't speak during the trailer and there is no information on them which makes the viewer curious as to who they are. Nicholas Abercrombie suggests that the genres are shifting and “becoming more permeable” meaning the horror genre and its subgenres are mixing together as well as other genres like comedy and action. For instance, in the Enthrallment there is an aggressor in a black cloak holding a knife which is shown in the reflection of a mirror. As we know knives (phallic objects) are usually used with the slasher genre as a penetrating weapon used against the female characters, this slightly crosses over with the conventions of a psychological horror film.
