Representation Essay

In this essay i will be talking about the representation scream queens, the final girl, religion and sexuality, hegemony and teen punishment, and the monster. during this essay i will be questioning and explaining who they are what they mean and why they are important to horror. I would say that my trailer is misogynistic due to the fact that there are are no females in the trailer which could connote patriarchy and male dominance. The monster in the trailer could represent how males are in society and how they try to dominate everyone and everything.

Firstly out of male gaze or scream queens i would say that our trailer applies to male gaze as although we don't have females in our trailer that we objectify we do have a view from male only perspectives, in my trailer all the camera shots were from either mine or Daniels point of view allowing the viewer to see from a male dominant view. This view is seen in the woods through out the trailer and you can see people dying and how they react to this death which is in a stereo typically more masculine way to how a girl would react (through screaming). Male gaze is used in multiple horror movies one example would be the teeth trailer as you are positioned to look at the female through the male doctors examining her, this shows that males are dominant and that women are objectified through films. My trailer in comparison did not successfully show male gaze because we didn't have any female characters in our group, the fact that the female subverted the typical male gaze theory was good as she ended using her body as a powerful object to take away the mans power through sex (cutting mans penis of with her privates) this movie is directed towards the representation of teens and that they will be punished if they have sex before marriage. the good thing about this theory is that it can be realistic as it might portray how men are in real life, but it is bad because it makes women feel more like objects rather then people, the typical shots that objectify women would be high angles as it portrays them as weak and intimidated. it might cause a limited audience as women wont want to watch the way men are and how they look at women. This would limit our trailer because we would have to make sure that things are seen from a males view rather then a normal view or a females view.

Secondly the final girl can be defined as a female character who is the last one to survive due to the fact that she has adopted male survivalist characteristics. Its function in a horror is to show that the stereotype of women being too 'girly' or 'slutty' is a lie and that women are independent and masculine enough to look after their self. The final girl theory is used to go against misogyny by showing us that females have what it takes to do and be what they want. it also sends a message out to men to say that you shouldn't judge a women just because of her sexuality and tells women that they shouldn't doubt their self just because they are female. A good example of this would be cabin in the woods, even though she isn't the last one alone she did manage to adopt male characteristics and was able to fend off the monsters, this was partly because she was a virgin, didn't sin, and didn't drink alcohol. this theory is good as women are like this in real life and makes women look how they are and the potential in them. the bad thing about this is that it goes against a typical horror film at times. in -addition this would limit the trailer because we would have to make sure that girl at the end survives and everyone else dies when this could prevent us from using loads of other conventions and theories. This would mean that our trailer is a male based trailer and that we can't really use females, this would further reinforce the connotation of patriarchy and male dominance. The final girl would not apply to our trailer as we did not have a female character in the trailer, therefore it would not be recognisable.

religion and sexuality can be defined as a religious symbol meaning that the film will be to do with sinning and will most likely be a super-natural as it will involve possession, exorcism, going with or against god, this type of film will typically have a monster or ghost to haunt people. its function in a film is to tell people to follow god and you will be safe and that if you go against god then you will be punished. This theory would apply to the film the conjuring 2 as it is highly based around religion and is very clear from the trailer as you can see at 1;06 there are several crosses on the walls that end up being turn't upside down by an unknown haunting person. i think that this film is meant to scare people into believing in god as it is supposedly based on a true story. this would not apply to my trailer but could if we made the monster haunted or satanic. We could do this through clothing by making the antagonist look possessed or by giving him red/black clothes to represent satan or evil in general. This would only be lightly recognisable in the trailer as the antagonist was wearing a black and grey jacket to signify evil. This would create the subtext of the trailer to be good v evil. this would be good for the trailer as this apparently happens in real life making the film scary because i could apply to people watching. Sexuality in religious horrors are seen as the males usually being the heroes, and the women being the ghost reader that gets hurt by the ghost, this symbolizes a phallic and yonic imagery to do with religion.

hegemony and teen punishment would definitely apply to my trailer and probably a lot of other trailers, in my trailer all but one teenager dies and this is because the typical character of the slutty one even though it wasn't a girl died because he had sex before marriage, this was good as it subverted the stereotype that women are the 'slutty' ones. In-addition Levi dies because of his stupidity and because he ate the berries. hegemony/Dominance applies to our trailer as it was males only in the trailer suggesting that males are important, females are irrelevant and that males have over all power. using teen punishment is very good for a trailer as it is broad and allows you to apply any other theories with it.hegemony is good because it is a typical convention.

In my trailer we had a monster, the bad thing about our trailer is that the monster wasn't very clearly a monster which defeated the purpose of it, typically the monster would have a significant mark such as a mask, weapon, outfit, and others. Monsters are very clear in the film cabin in the woods as they are mutant like, vampire-like, werewolf like and alien looking which was good. this shows the meaning of teen punishment and is reinforced through this film as teenagers are killed one by one in this film until the the last two are left standing. the strengths of having monsters is that they are a good scare factor and they look interesting, they also make the film easier to watch as it is exciting to see what would happen next. the limitations of having a monster are very small and would be that a certain audience might not be into monsters because they aren't realistic.
