real media text essay

Introduction: Through out media there are several conventions that have particular rules that must be followed when creating a media product in-order to keep structure in that product and to prevent the audience from any confusion, having these rules also allow the audience to identify what they are looking at based on it's stereotypes, genre, sub-genre, characters and more. Mainly focusing on film the conventions would be the genre and sub-genre and must be followed successfully so that the product in known and understood for its purpose and expression. However it is possible that you can break down, and re-make the conventions. By doing this it will result in an increase in creativity because there will be more then one meaning for that specific convention, reinventing these conventions are highly recommended due to the fact that it is one of the only things that enable the product to stand out.

During AS I had created a magazine front cover, a contents page and double page spread but my creativity towards making these products were limited as i did not have a good understanding of the meaning of the conventions and why they had been placed in the way that they had been, i also did not know their individual purpose and what they did to add effect to the whole page and this lead to me being incapable of jumbling (bricolage) up the conventions and re-imaging them to make my own unique product. I did have a good understanding of the typical colours and conventional dominant images in a hip/hop magazine in which the colours were used to create a superior, dangerous and intimidating feeling towards the viewers and the dominant image was used to make the rapper look serious, superior and wealthy. It was probably evident that i understood this through my magazine as i used colours and the main image correctly. however if i had a better understanding of the conventions then it would have lead to a more successful product.

In A2 i have decided to make a trailer that is based around the sub-genre of slasher. From the start there was clear development through research as i had looked at at least 24 different real media text trailers which aided me in being able to know what the semiotics behind the trailer mean't and that i had seen more examples of what to do and gave me inspiration on what i could do so that the trailer was professional and unique. For our trailer we have followed a similar structure to insidious 4: the last key as it has intense music in the background and quick pace as the trailer goes on along with a montage towards the end. In-addition to the pace i have seen that you can't have the resolution to the story as you want  people to pay to watch the film.

We have also made the trailer atypical slasher through following trailers such as Texas chainsaw massacre when it comes to costume and make-up and we followed it by creating a lot of blood and gory looking wounds. To conclude i have clearly shown that i have a better
understanding/development of how to follow conventions and structure this year mostly through the horror slasher sub-genre. During AS i did hardly any planning or research which mean't that i could not be as creative as i wanted to be as i would have lacked structure and would have confused the audience. In A2 i had put a lot more effort into both the planning and research and it helped me highly as i knew what was required for me to be able to make a successful and conventional product.
