Regulation Exam Prep

what is regulation?

I think that regulation is something that is used through out all formats of media in-order to prevent and protect viewers from seeing media that is not suitable for an audience and is also there to control what is seen for particular reasons, this may be because the viewer wants to watch an 18 rated film but is too young for example, the regulation has been put in place so that the young viewer is not damaged by what the content has to give. Moreover regulation is put in place to try and minimise stereotyping and influential behaviour for example; kids watching a music video of their role model objectifying women could result in them behaving the same way.

who should regulate?

For regulation to be as fair and correct as possible we need impartial decisions to be made meaning that we need several regulators from multiple different backgrounds to ensure that the decisions made are fair and non-biased. This means tat we need different genders, races, ages, and regional culture to regulate the media to make sure that the right judgments are made to have the best impact on society. In-addition to this we need multiple different people to share their beliefs so that regulation isn't done incorrectly. Thirdly we need to be multiple viewings so that simple and complex messages are not overlooked and so that the initial impact is put across in a way that a normal audience would receive the message. finally the regulators met be of certain age to ensure that mature decisions are made and the regulators must not have anything to do with the government to prevent biased rulings and to ensure that the person making the decision is your average normal person.

should regulation exist?

Firstly I believe that regulation should exist as it clearly protects vulnerable people from seeing content that they are not ready for. In doing this it means that the audience does not see any traumatic,   explicit or damaging messages. Secondly regulation should work as a deterrent to make sure that the law is held properly. Thirdly regulation prevents people from seeing/ doing anything that is immoral and stops viewers from thinking that immoral things are ok to do. Lastly regulation prevents normal audiences from performing illegal acts as a means of making a film. for example punching someone in he face for a film is an illegal act unless it is regulated.
